Simulation Modalities
What is simulation?
Simulation is a technique, not a technology, that can use a variety of modalities. Healthcare simulation can replace or amplify real experiences with guided experiences that evoke or replicate substantial aspects of the real world in a fully interactive manner (Gaba Future Vision Qual Saf Health Care 2004).
Simulation Modalities
- Task Trainers
- Standardized Patients
- Computerized Manikins
- Virtual Reality
- Case Studies
- Hybrid
Replicating the essential aspects of a clinical situation allows a participant to more readily understand and apply these skills when in a clinical setting. The use of a blend of low fidelity and high-fidelity simulations approximates what the participants may encounter in the clinical setting.
Key concepts in this learning environment include the following:
- Patient safety
- Communication
- Interdisciplinary collaboration
- Teamwork
- Cultural competence
- Informatics
- Evidence-based practice
